Purusha and Prakriti
Purusha is the primordial force of the soul or spirit, male. Prakriti is the cosmic manifesting energy, female. The two are essentially one.
The Purusha or the Self is beyond Prakriti. It is eternally separate from the latter. Purusha is without beginning or end. It is without attributes and without qualities. It is subtle and omnipresent. It is beyond mind, intellect and the senses.
Prakriti is the basis of all objective existence. Prakriti does not create for itself. All objects are for the enjoyment of the spirit or soul. Prakriti creates only when it comes into union with Purusha.
Out of Prakriti come the mind (manas), the intellect (buddhi), and the ego (ahankara). The spirit (atman) emanates out of the universal Purusha energy.
The Sun represents the atman. The Moon represents manas. Mercury represents buddhi. The combination of the three creates the ego, or ahankara.
