Astrology of the Swine Flu

mexicomask.jpgWith the unfolding swine-bird flu that is taking North America by storm, it merits a look at the astrology going on as the drama commenced over the last weekend.  I have a little catchphrase “the stars never lie”, which certainly bears out with recent events.  Of course there are always layers and layers to any major event, which can't be covered by the configurations of just a couple of days; but the following configurations (noted beforehand on SWN) certainly shed light on the situation.

Over three consecutive days, Friday, April 24 through Sunday April 26, three separate configurations occurred each day: Sun square Nodes, Mercury square Neptune, and Mars square Pluto.  The Sun/Node aspect indicates fateful,  significant events; the Mercury/Neptune indicates some kind of misinformation, exaggeration, or misinterpretation of events,; and the Mars/Pluto aspect indicates and unusually strong, severe, and coercive thrusts on the part of people or groups.

Plagues and so-called outbreaks usually don't happen by themselves, most modern diseases such as AIDS have been shown to be produced first in laboratories and then somehow “gets out”.  Events such as disease outbreaks can provide convenient pretexts for government interventions and initiatives; I don't want to come off as alarmist, but I want to underscore the truth that nothing is quite what it appears to be.

Since people are dying all the time from diseases (thousands per year) it would seem this situation is exaggerated by the authorities.  The astrology of the weekend would indicate a situation that was ready to pop (Sun/Node), based on questionable premises (Mercury/Neptune), and quite aggressively exploited (Mars/Pluto).  Some commentators say that this is a situation being exploited by the Mexican government, which is under the threat of overthrow by element who themselves would exploit Mexico's corruption and poverty.  Nevertheless, there is a lot of reaction in the US and abroad.

Saturn aspecting Pluto

Moving to this week's astrology, I get a case to prove how readers of SWN get the best of both worlds of Vedic and Western astrology.  While I use Vedic astrology to interpret charts, I still use the outer planets in transit analysis and I also take the so-called minor aspects of western style into account.  It makes for more work for me, but I do get the satisfaction of covering configurations that most other astrologers miss out on.

On Friday, May 1, transiting Saturn and Pluto will form a tridecile to each other. What is a tridecile?  A decile is 36 degrees, or one tenth of 360 degrees; so a tri-decile would be three deciles, which comes to 108 degrees (3 x 36).  This is the family of aspects of the fifth and tenth harmonic; that is, 36, 72, 108, 144, and 180 degrees.  Those are all divisions of the circle by 10 or multiples of 5.  Fifth and tenth harmonic aspects are “punchy” in satplu050109.jpgtheir effects, but not necessarily as potentially catastrophic or overwhelming as the “normal” hard aspects such as the square.  Supposedly the fifth and tenth harmonic aspects stimulate more creativity than the others.

Chart at right is Saturn and Pluto on May 1, 2009 (sidereal zodiac).

Be that as it may, the tridecile of Saturn and Pluto of May 1 should have the typical effects of intensification of hardship, the activation of compulsive anxieties and obsessions, and the collapse and breakdown of significant societal structures and paradigms.  As Pluto is the great intensifier of whatever it connects with, it acts to make Saturn's typical pathological events all the more acute.  On a more positive note, Pluto can also act upon Saturn's ability to make us more organized, in control, and able to accomplish significant things.

Balance however is definitely not a quality of Pluto, which deals rather in extremes; and it is in balanced state of mind wherein we manifest the works that endure.  All things having their purpose though, sometimes we need to act in an extreme manner to address extreme situations and this would be a configuration apropos to that.  For instance if you found out that a murderer voiced intentions to kill you, you would take appropriate countermeasures.  Possibly in reaction to this swine flu situation, there will be extreme measures enacted to counter it with all of the inconvenience, sacrifice, and hard work that might be involved with it.  Look for a peak of this energy on Friday, May 1; but certainly other peaks will be coming down the road.

satplugraph050109.jpgThis image shows a graphical representation of the transits of Saturn and Pluto on the tenth harmonic, the graph gives the idea of two planets in different position are in the same position “on another level”.  This graph was generated with my copy of Solar Fire Gold, an outstanding astrology program.  If you look at this graph you can see the Saturn line turns in the opposite direction on May 16 (meaning it turns direct), which multiplies the intensity of any planet on the order of 10 times, and it will still be in close tridecile to Pluto at that time.  May 16 could be quite a day, a high point to remember.

Therefore it would not be a stretch to project out that the current fervor over the swine flu and its resultant events will be peaking around May 16, 2009.

Mon, May 4
The spirit of adventure and enterprise will be sparked off, setting off all sorts of big talkers, haughty strutters, and impulsive attention cravers; however in that large crowd will be a more humble group that actually gets things done; and they will get a good charge today.  Good day for a hike, shaking off the fetters, and rolling up your sleeves.  (Mars semisquare Jupiter)

This week the major event astrologically (from a Vedic point of view) is the ingress of Jupiter into the sidereal sign of Aquarius.  This does give me an opportunity to talk some about the sidereal vs. tropical divide in astrology, at least to some extent, the words of which may be put into a more edited version later.

Jupiter moving into sidereal Aquarius means a few things. First, this means Jupiter moves into a new house in everybody's chart.  If you use whole sign houses (which I highly recommend) you don't get squished, very small houses on one side and then very large over-extended houses on the other.  Whole sign houses gives you a saner, more workable house system that enables true house interpretation.

In my opinion western astrology emphasizes aspects between planets because their house systems are not very effective.  Some people may challenge me on this point, but I simply ask anyone to give a sidereal house system a try especially using planetary rulers in other houses.

It is a sad but true tendency of humanity to utilize and investigate systems and models of thought only to the extent that is validates their previously held biases, beliefs, and established ways of thinking.  Getting “out of the box” is not so important because to them; what is important to them is feeling good about what they do, and if it conforms to the traditions and paradigms that have molded them.  Social acceptance of any idea or thought is a powerful criteria for a lot of people, but not necessarily lending any sort of truth to that idea.

It takes an individual of rare courage to become a champion for truth; his need to get to the bottom of things must be greater than his need for social acceptance of his ideas.  But it is not my point here to deride western astrology, but it is to urge everyone towards a constant testing and validation of our ideas, to never stop sharpening our discernment and seeking to provide a better service to our clients.  Above all, never to dismiss or scoff at any idea just because it sounds “ridiculous”.

You can extend these ideas to not only astrology, but other things like politics and spirituality.  Sometimes there is very little intellect in intellectual matters; but pride, prejudice, and intimidation instead.

Having said that perhaps it is apropos that Jupiter is indeed entering the “intellectual” sign of Aquarius.  Aquarius rules the thoughts and social paradigms that mold and animate our society, that give us a sense of group identity, and a greater concern for the “whole” as opposed to merely the “self”.  Jupiter is a planet of ebullient exposition, full of all sorts of enthusiasm, hyperbole, and ceremony.

Aquarius, ruled by Saturn, is more rigid and dry compared to Jupiter's open-ended buoyancy; so the combination is perhaps going to take some away from both the sign and the planet involved.  But for everybody this means the entry of the a benefic planet into a new house for everyone.  For myself, it therefore enters my fourth house and I might be seeing an expansion of my home living environment in the next twelve months (the time it takes Jupiter to travel through one sign).  For Leo rising people this may portend some upbeat new relationship scenario coming into play (seventh house); for Taurus rising people this may indicate a new period of success and advancement (tenth house); and so on.

The condition of Aquarius' ruler Saturn will also affect the interpretation here; and since it is debilitated in sidereal Leo right now for the next few months it will have the effect of downgrading the manifestions of Jupiter traveling through Aquarius. This could possibly mean an accent on Jupiter's hype factor as opposed to the true illumination it can bring, and an overall inflation of Aquarius' lesser qualities such as sloganistic messages for citizens to work for the common good (which Obama used quite a bit in his election campaign), which are short on substance but long on grandiose adjectives.

Positively, but at cost to taxpayers, Jupiter here could bring increased social spending that helps people and is mandated by economic hard times.  Due to the debilitated nature of Jupiter here keep in mind the idea of new outlays to enhance the appearance of things, but little to nothing to address the crumbling infrastructure beneath.

Looking at other things, there is also a conjunction of Venus and Mars this week on Tuesday, April 21st (same as Jupiter entering Aquarius); this should be good for all relationships and the power of love in our lives.  Around the 24th the Sun will come to a square to the Nodes, which should certainly be a significant day for everyone at some level or another; the Nodes correspond to deep spiritual and karmic forces in our lives.

On Sunday, April 26th, Mars and Pluto will square each other; this configuration is similar to taking the safety valve off of a steam engine, it may push its output past previous limits but the system overheats and breaks down.  Similarly in a psychological context, barriers which keep powerful forces at bay are let down (or broken-through) and people could get hurt.  During Mars/Pluto configurations repressessed energies come out and if they are correctly governed great things can be accomplished; but if not well handled, there can be much cause for regret.

Mars conjunct and parallel Uranus

Mars Conjunct and Parallel Uranus, April 15 & 16, 2009: Unsatisfied and Unconstrained

The most significant astrological event this week is the conjunction of Mars and Uranus,  and then their forming a parallel to each other the next day; April 15 and 16 respectively.   Then on Friday, April 17, Venus makes a station and turns direct.

Mars is always a planet that you can't ignore.  Mars desires and acts; and there is nary a separation of the two.  To Mars (and Mars-ruled people) to desire is to move on those desires: act, fulfill, consummate.  Of course without Mars, humanity might not have been emboldened enough to venture out of the cave. Uranus is like a higher octave of Mars, making the “selfish” goals of Mars multiplicitous, social, and broadly evolutionary.

Both planets are rather unsatisfied by nature and not ones to be constrained; therefore their combination this week could be unsettling and possibly contentious in their effects on us....
